MOVIES THAT SHAPED OUR STYLE #5
When it comes to fashion, we believe individuality is key. Creating and maturing a personal sense of style is a lengthy process that usually starts in your teens and carries one until your way into your 30s or even 40s. As we go through it, we are influenced by multiple sources: friends, family and peers but also other creative areas complementary to fashion, such as art, music, design, architecture and of course, cinema.
While all of them pitch in, music and movies are definitely the influences that most strongly resonate with us here at Wrong Weather. As such, we though about putting together a list of the movies that were most influential to us fashion-wise, and not necessarily because they focus on the subject. Our team is quite eclectic when it comes to personal styles, so there will be something for everyone as we build this series week after week.
We took into consideration the fact that like us, many of you are stuck at home, so most of the titles on this list are available on subscription services such as Netflix, Amazon or HBO, meaning you can enjoy them from the comfort of your home. So, without further ado, here are this week’s suggestions:
SERPICO (1973):
Inspired by the real story of the New-York Police Office Frank Serpico, the movie tells the story of an idealistic cop that is faced with widespread corruption within the NYPD. The iconic role, played by Al Pacino, has been pointed as one of his best and an example for newly found stars within Hollywood, to not stop looking for complex roles. Throughout the movie, Serpico showcases a range of outstanding looks, inspired by his hippie roots, that remain a reference to this day.
THE GREAT BEAUTY (2013)
An irrefutable reference when it comes sartorial menswear, The Great Beauty is a deep dive into the life of Jep Gambardella, a sybaritic writer living in Rome. Besides the outstanding photography work that provides a never before seen look in the Italian Capital and the opulent lifestyle of the Roman elite, The Great Beauty is a reference for classic tailoring. Perfectly embodying the nonchalance Italians are known for, Jep peruses a range of tailored combos that provide a window into his soul, both full and empty. Armani, Cesare Attolini and Tods are but a few of the brands on display.
A SINGLE MAN (2009)
With Tom Ford at the helm, A Single Man has become a reference for both fashion and design lovers. From the impeccably decorated interiors and architecture to the pristine line up of suits and dress shirts, it’s hard not to be impressed by the aesthetics of the movie. Colin Firth plays a grieving professor that decides to end his life, but that never compromises on looking flawless as part of his morning ritual. From his formal styles to his students’ more laid-back attires, A Single Man depicts a wide range of menswear influences done brilliantly.
