The Maison Margiela 2024 Artisanal Collection masterfully encapsulates this concept, reflecting the practices and moments that shape our inner selves through the art of haute couture.
Set under the atmospheric Pont Alexandre III, illuminated by the first full moon of the year, Creative Director John Galliano conjures a snapshot of Parisian life, capturing the essence of the city’s nocturnal spirit. The collection debuted with a cinematic prelude, unfolding in a multi-disciplinary showcase imbued with the eerie, rainy ambience of Paris by night. The garments, steeped in the unconscious gestures that define our expressions, explore the ritual of dressing through meticulous haute couture techniques.
The collection, a year in the making, showcased extraordinary pieces. Galliano’s designs featured extreme hourglass silhouettes, with cinched waists and padded hips, sheer bias-cut gowns, and merkins boldly on display. Trompe l’oeil gowns in watercolour chiffons resembled impressionist paintings, flowing effortlessly over the models. This show marked a return to form for Galliano, a reclaiming of his creative essence.
Everything converged to create a monumental show. Jess Hallet’s diverse model casting, under Pat Boguslawski’s movement direction, brought characters to life with commitment. Pat McGrath’s makeup transformed models into doll-like figures with cellophane-like skin, while Duffy’s hair creations evoked candy floss belle époque up-dos.
For the older crowd, it was a reminder of Galliano’s distinct narrative power, while younger attendees witnessed an unparalleled level of catwalk commitment. In full storytelling mode, Galliano’s fashion fantasy was given unfettered freedom, resulting in a show that was truly awe-inspiring.
